Urushi Maple and Cherry Spoons (Set of 4)
Rabea Gebler has a deep appreciation for urushi lacquering, and with this set of four spoons, we see the wonderful results that stem from the technique. The shape of each one is roughed with an axe before being carved and lacquered with multiple layers of urushi – a natural material that’s harvested from the tree of the same name, and only hardens in a controlled humid environment. These spoons are lacquered using two different techniques, showing a contrast between the inside and outside of the spoon. Note how thinly it’s been applied to each piece, ensuring the unique grain of the wood can shine through.
